Starter Locs: What to Expect in the First 6 Months
My Natural Hair Spa · October 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Starting locs is exciting, and the first few months are also when people are most tempted to give up. Knowing what is normal makes the journey much easier.
Month 0–1: the starter stage
Right after your install, your locs look neat and defined, whether they were started with comb coils, two-strand twists, braids or interlocking.
What is normal: - Some unraveling, especially after the first wash, if your locs were started with coils or twists. - A tight, tender scalp for a few days. - Locs that feel soft, not locked yet.
What to do: follow your stylist's advice on when to first wash. Be gentle, and do not pick at them.
Month 1–3: frizz and budding
This is when locking begins. You may notice:
- Frizz everywhere. This is your hair starting to tangle and lock, not a sign of failure.
- Buds. Small bumps or knots inside each loc. That is where locking is happening.
- Locs that look a little puffier and less defined.
What to do: wash regularly with a residue-free shampoo, dry your hair fully, and resist the urge to retwist every few days.
Month 3–6: shrinkage and the awkward phase
Many people are surprised when their locs get shorter. As each loc locks and becomes denser, it shrinks. This is normal and temporary. Length comes back as your locs mature.
You may also see:
- Locs that stick up or out instead of hanging.
- Some locs that are thicker or thinner than others.
- New growth at the root that needs maintenance.
This is often called the awkward phase. Every loc journey has one. Headbands, scarves and simple updos get you through it.
Maintenance in the first six months
- Get your first retwist about 4–6 weeks after your install, then keep a regular schedule. See how often you should retwist.
- Use light products. Heavy wax and creams build up inside new locs.
- Sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet to cut frizz and lint.
- Keep tension low. Tight styles on new locs can thin your roots and edges.
When to ask for help
Book a visit if you notice locs merging together, a sore or flaky scalp that will not settle, thin spots at the root, or locs unraveling far more than expected.
