“How much are Sisterlocks?” is one of the first questions people ask, and the honest answer is: it depends on your hair. Here is what goes into the price, so you can plan before you book.

The three costs to plan for

  1. The consultation. At our salon it is $30 for about 30 minutes. It is where you get a real quote for your hair.
  2. The installation. This is the big one-time cost. It covers many hours of careful, skilled work.
  3. Ongoing reties. Every 4–6 weeks for as long as you wear your locs. At My Natural Hair Spa, a Sisterlocks retie starts at $200 and takes about 5 hours, shampoo included.

Many people only budget for the install. The reties are what you will pay most often, so plan for them too.

What makes an installation cost more (or less)

Installation is priced mostly by time, and time depends on:

  • Length. Longer hair means more hair to lock in each section.
  • Density. Thick hair means more locs on your head.
  • Loc size. Smaller locs look finer and give more styling options, but there are more of them, so the install takes longer.
  • Head size. Simply more scalp to cover.
  • Hair condition. Hair that needs a trim, a takeout or extra detangling first adds time.

A full install often takes 8–12 hours or more and is usually split into two sessions. That is why prices vary so much from person to person, and why an honest salon will not quote you a firm number without seeing your hair.

What makes a retie cost more

  • Time since your last retie. More new growth means more work. Tell us the number of weeks when you book.
  • Number of locs. Smaller, more numerous locs take longer.
  • Repairs. Weak or thinning locs may need extra care.

Coming in on schedule, every 4–6 weeks, usually keeps each retie shorter and more predictable.

Sisterlocks vs. microlocs on cost

If Sisterlocks are outside your budget right now, microlocs can be a good alternative. They can be started with different methods and sizes, so there is more room to match your budget. Compare them in Sisterlocks vs. microlocs.

Is the consultation worth it?

Yes. For $30 you get a real assessment of your hair, a recommendation on technique and size, the price and deposit for your install, how long it will take, and a plan for caring for your locs early on. You will know exactly what you are committing to before you spend hundreds of dollars. See what happens at a consultation.
