How Often Should You Retwist Your Locs?

Fresh roots feel amazing, so it is tempting to retwist as often as you can. But when it comes to locs, more is not always better.

The short answer: every 4–6 weeks

For most people, a retwist every 4–6 weeks keeps locs neat without stressing the roots. Some people with slower growth, or who like a fuller root look, go a little longer.

Why retwisting too often hurts your locs

Every retwist puts a little tension on the root. Do it every week or two and that tension adds up:

  • Thinning at the root. The base of the loc can get narrow and weak.
  • Breakage. Thin roots can snap, especially with heavy, long locs.
  • Traction around the edges. Repeated tightening along the hairline can thin your edges.

Giving your new growth time to fill in makes for stronger roots and fuller locs.

Signs you are due for a retwist

  • You have about a quarter to half an inch of new growth.
  • New growth is starting to merge between neighboring locs.
  • Your parts are getting hard to see.
  • You have a photo shoot, event or trip coming up.

Retwist vs. interlocking

Retwisting (palm rolling) twists new growth into the loc with a light product. It looks soft and natural.

Interlocking pulls the loc's end through the root to lock new growth. It lasts longer between visits and holds up better to swimming and workouts, so many people interlock every 6–8 weeks instead.

Your stylist can tell you which method suits your locs, and you can switch over time.

Keeping roots healthy between visits

  • Wash regularly. Clean locs lock better, and a clean scalp grows healthier hair.
  • Dry your locs fully after washing to avoid mildew.
  • Use light, water-based products. Heavy wax and butter build up inside locs.
  • Sleep with a satin scarf, bonnet or pillowcase.
  • Do not re-twist your own roots every few days between appointments.
