A fresh silk press is one of the best feelings there is: light, swingy and shiny. The question everyone asks on the way out: how long will it last?

The short answer: 2–4 weeks

Most silk presses last 2–4 weeks. Where you land in that range depends on:

  • Your hair texture. Tighter curl patterns tend to revert sooner.
  • Humidity and sweat. Moisture is what makes a press revert.
  • How you sleep on it. Friction and frizz add up night after night.
  • How it was done. Clean, well-conditioned hair that was pressed properly holds longer.

9 tips to make your silk press last

  1. Wrap your hair every night. Use a doobie wrap or pin curls, then cover with a satin scarf or bonnet.
  2. Sleep on satin or silk. A satin pillowcase is a good backup if your scarf slips.
  3. Keep water away. Wear a shower cap, and avoid steamy bathrooms.
  4. Plan around workouts. Sweat at the root is the fastest way to revert. Try a headband and a low-sweat workout, or schedule your press after a big event.
  5. Check the weather. Carry a scarf or umbrella on humid or rainy days.
  6. Go light on products. Heavy oils weigh hair down and make it look greasy. A few drops on the ends is enough.
  7. Do not add more heat every day. Re-pressing at home damages your hair and shortens the time before your next salon visit. Pin curls overnight are kinder.
  8. Keep your hands out of it. Touching it often brings oil and frizz.
  9. Start with healthy ends. Split ends make a press look frizzy fast. A trim at your appointment helps.

When should you wash it out?

When your roots start reverting, your hair feels heavy, or your scalp needs a wash, it is time. Most people wash after 2–3 weeks. Do not leave product and buildup on your scalp just to stretch the style.

How often is it safe to get a silk press?

Spacing presses out and wearing your natural curls in between is the healthiest approach for most people. If you notice your curls are not bouncing back after a wash, give your hair a break and add a protein treatment or deep condition to your next appointment.
